The discrimination involving addiction today mostly takes place in the world of addiction treatment, where people like Pat Kennedy and Dr. Drew continue to spread the myth that all recovery is achieved through faith-based, 12 step recovery groups such as AA and NA. This is not true. While faith based methods help some, they are not appropriate for all nor do their adherents achieve "better" recovery than those who utilize science-based approaches. It is high time we started a conversation about the various paths to recovery and stopped focusing entirely on those who believe that their recovery depends upon a belief in personal powerlessness and the redemptive power of God.
