Good day and a busy news day. House Republicans move forward with their temporary plan to keep the government running for two weeks. To them, a down payment on budget cutting. And to both parties, part of a longer, larger test about political will and spending priorities. A lot of moving parts in the Libya crisis, too, not the least of which are the growing list of US naval assets moving into the neighborhood in case there are military contingencies put in play. A no-fly zone and humanitarian assistance are the leading options. But these deliberations could get more consequential of Col. Gadhafi continues to ignore demands that he yield power. Erick and John focus primarily on domestic issues today, but both make important points – energy related – on how the Libya crisis reverberates here, economically and politically.

– Overreach and Backlash: These are the twin drivers of American politics, the force behind the pendulum swing. Republicans should be checking their impulse to ideologically overreach – temptations abound, from Wisconsin (where I think they’re right on the substance but increasingly wrong on the style) to threats to defund PBS. We know how this movie ends: 2010 = 1994; 2012 = 1996.

– Libyan Fight Continues: the western glitterati who celebrated Qaddafi’s son’s commitment to ‘civil society’ are eating some serious crow after this weekend’s interviews and continued bloodshed. With the price of oil up 14% last week, is the Interior Department’s decision to allow deep water drilling once again, unrelated?

– The end of an era: The last surviving World War I veteran, Frank Buckles died at age 110. He had also survived a WWI POW camp in the Philippines. Less celebrated but no less an icon of far different era was Suze Rotolo, the adoring girlfriend on Bob Dylan’s arm walking down a snowy fourth street on the cover of the “‘Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan.” RIP to them both.

– When Bush was President, Democrats demanded he release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to alleviate gas prices. Not now. The Energy Secretary is on record encouraging higher gas prices. This will hurt the Democrats.

– Democrats in Wisconsin are lashing out. One Democratic Assemblyman threw water and papers at his colleagues on the Assembly floor. Another told a Republican Assemblywoman that she was "f-ing dead." New tone and all that.

– The Washington Post's Greg Sargent went on Twitter to encourage unions in Wisconsin to get violent - oblivious to incidents that have already happened. Sargent says he was being sarcastic, but he'd never give the benefit of the doubt to anyone on the right who did the same.
