Be in the know: Today's political bullet points

Every day we ask influential politicos to send us their top three bullet points that are driving the day's conversation inside and outside Washington.

RedState.Com Editor Erick-Woods Erickson:

– I think it is about time to focus on one key aspect of 2012 – there are more people who want someone other than Romney than who want Romney. I've got up a post at CNN.com on this very point.

– Herman Cain wins the Florida GOP straw poll. It speaks volumes about how ready the GOP base is to embrace someone not just running against Obama, but for a specific recovery plan. It is always real warning sign to Rick Perry that he better fix his problems or else.

– Speaking of Perry, a new CNN poll has him in the lead with Gingrich rising and Romney staying strong. If Perry cannot, in the next two weeks, recover from the stigma of the debate performance, he might quickly become an also run. Best way to recover from that debate? Strong fundraising numbers, which should be about in about two weeks.

Senior Editor of MarioWire.com Mario Solis-Marich:

– Politically Incorrect: Conservatives are shocked that Rick Perry thinks it would be heartless to punish immigrant children for the crimes of their parents, they prefer he use more polite language when he points out flaws in their ideology of anger.

– Philosophically Correct: Another Tea Party caused shutdown looms as Speaker Boehner fails some more, but the GOP doesn’t worry because if a Leader falls in the forest and nobody talks about it it doesn’t make a sound.

– Critical Misdirect: Over the weekend the President told African American leaders to “stop complaining” perhaps he should give his top campaign advisers the same advice.

Be in the know: Today's political bullet points

Every day we ask influential politicos to send us their top three bullet points that are driving the day's conversation inside and outside Washington.

RedState.Com Editor Erick-Woods Erickson:

– There's another debate in Florida tonight. I'm finding more and more Perry supporters are just finally accepting the truth that he is not a good debater. Still, more polling out of Florida shows Perry has not been hurt too badly by his performances.

– I would not be surprised if the next big wave of attacks on Perry center on immigration. Texas has seen a huge influx of immigrants and Perry has supported giving illegal aliens who came into Texas as children access to state schools at the in-state rate.

– President Obama's polling continues to go down as he makes amends with his base. The question is whether by making amends with his base, is he further alienating independent voters. Signs point to yes.

Senior Editor of MarioWire.com Mario Solis-Marich:

– Third Down: Speaker Boehner fails another leadership test in the House of Representatives as he can’t get the necessary votes for disaster relief funding; can anybody explain why he receives a pass on his failed Speakership?

– Side Line Coaching: Wall Street protests go largely unnoticed, tip to protesters: hold up signs blaming Obama and watch the media swarm!

– Instant Pre-Play: Another GOP debate tonight, here is a pre-cap: “Social Security is a Ponzi scheme”, “no its not”, “Obama is the cause of every problem known to humanity” and “the rich are our friends” – now you can spend your time watching something else…you’re welcome.

Be in the know: Today's political bullet points

Every day we ask influential politicos to send us their top three bullet points that are driving the day's conversation inside and outside Washington.

RedState.Com Editor Erick-Woods Erickson:

– Sorry, but you want to know what conservatives are talking about today? This picture. Hahaha.

– The Marist poll is out. Lots of buzz about it. Sarah Palin is now competitive with Barack Obama. We'll need a few other polls out with the same result to make sure it is consistent, but if it is it shows independents have moved on from Barack Obama.

– One story that is not getting enough attention with all the focus on taxes, budgets, deficits, etc. is the brewing scandal at the ATF regarding Operation Gun Walker. The story is pretty straight forward. The ATF set up a system for guns to be bought by Mexican drug cartels, walked across into Mexico, and then the guns could be traced to paint a picture of how the cartels were operating. But the operation spiraled out of control, an American border patrol agent got killed with one of the guns, 200 more deaths in Mexico are linked to Gun Walker guns, an ATF agent has been caught in secret tapes saying she recommended the ATF hire an investigator to dig up dirt on a nosey U.S. Senator, and we never told Mexico about the operation. Even without partisan bits, this is a troublesome story. But add in the partisan mix — how far up in the Department of Justice did this go — and the story compounds into an even more menacing story of out of control government bureaucrats.
